Volunteer with us!

SELAH volunteers build relationships and trust while serving our neighbors in need. We are powered by nearly 600 active volunteers who dedicate their time running drop-in and outreach programs every single week — rain or shine. Take a look at our opportunities below and join us as a volunteer!

What does volunteering look like?

  • Drop-In Programs

At our drop-in programs, volunteers distribute food, clothing, and hygiene products to participants. Participants can also visit our Services Desk.

  • Outreach Programs

At our outreach programs, volunteers visit our unhoused neighbors at encampments around our area, building relationships and connecting them to services and supplies.

  • Services Desk

Our services desk volunteers volunteers help participants navigate various processes, including mail services, public transport assistance, ID and birth certificate applications.

  • Additional Opportunities

Food prep, harm reduction kit and hygiene kit building, graphic design, writing, sorting and helping to inventory donations, and supporting special projects. There’s no end to volunteer opportunities at SELAH!

SELAH’S CULTURE STATEMENT

Our volunteers are integral to our mission of building community with each other and with our unhoused neighbors. Volunteers treat each other and our larger community with respect and care, acknowledging that we come to this work with different perspectives and life experiences. We are thoughtful and caring in our communications and allow space for others' ideas and concerns. As an organization we know that this work can be challenging and we encourage our volunteers to take steps to avoid excess stress or burnout from this work. It’s okay to step away and take a break if you need space. We encourage you to process any stress with program leads, other volunteers or trusted friends and family. If you feel like it would be useful to speak to a professional, our staff and board are here to provide resources and referrals.

SELAH COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

SELAH's top priority is the health and safety of our volunteers and the people we serve. For this reason, we have enacted the following protocols related to COVID-19, which are aligned with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health:

  • Volunteers are expected to be fully vaccinated as defined by the CDC

  • Volunteers are expected to follow LA County Department of Public Health mask rules for indoor public spaces (note: guidance varies based on current impact level)

  • If you have symptoms or test positive for COVID-19, please follow LACDPH isolation instructions

  • If you are in close contact with someone with COVID-19, please follow LACDPH instructions for close contact

SELAH COVID FAQs:

Q: Should I wear a mask outside?

A: Wearing a mask outside is your choice.

Q: Should I wear a mask inside?

A: Our volunteers may always choose to wear masks to protect themselves and the vulnerable population we serve. Whether or not masks are required, however, depends on COVID-19's current impact level, as defined by the LA County Department of Health. SELAH leads are responsible for communicating any change in the impact level that would necessitate masking.

Q: Will SELAH provide masks?

A: Yes. We have masks available to everyone, including both participants and volunteers. If you can't find one, please ask a lead.
